February 2015 AJE Component of the Month...featuring Metal Clay Morsels

by me!  Yes, it is my honor to have provided metal clay components for the design team in copper and white copper.  Read about my design process for them here.

I chose to make a pair of earrings with a couple sets of my left over components in white copper.  I used larger circles that were stamped with the very center of the carving, and small circles stamped from the swirl.  I connected them with Czech glass flower beads in a pretty cornflower blue shade, then added sterling ear wires that have been embellished with more Czech glass.

I hope  you will go and show some love to those who have created designs using them!  Here are the participants.

February 2015 is my month to contribute a Component of the month for  the Art Jewelry Elements blog hop challenge!  I have the honor of providing this month's component. After polling the group, I decided to do some metal clay.

I am new to the medium, but as I talked about in previous posts, love it and strive to find my voice with it!

These are all copper, using the same original carved stamping by me.  The dots around certain designs are actually holes through the design, hard to see in the photo!

December 2014 AJE Component of the Month

Our lovely components this month are from Diana Ptaszynski of Suburban Girl Studio, LLC.  We had our choice of stoneware snowflakes.  I chose a white one.

As per my usual modus operandi, I waited until the very last minute, then some family dynamics prohibited me from completely finishing mine.  The chain needs to be secured, it needs LOS and a tumble, and I may completely redo the clasp.

Along with Diana's sweet focal, I included a cute blue bird by Caroline Dewison of BlueberriBeads, a white lampwork bead from Mermaid Glass, one of my own copper metal clay components (it started out as a flower, but I filed it into sort of a snowflake shape!) a Czech glass flower, and some cool brushed-finish copper beads from my stash.

I really like the monochromatic effect of all the winter white, with the one pop of color Caroline's sweet bird adds.

I may add some more beads and completely change the design...stay tuned!  But first, go see what others have created!  Thanks for stopping by...

New Copper Metal Clay!

Hi all, just updated my site with some new Copper Clay Morsels.  Still new to metal clay, but am really happy with how these turned out!  Here is a sampling...

Sizes in these photos are a bit wonky, but there are dimensions listed in the postings.  I am definitely having fun with metal clay and hope to have some white copper and maybe some bronze as well, sometime soon!

Oh, and a reminder...if you use TURKEY14 at checkout, you will receive a 20% discount though Monday, Dec. 12!  I've uploaded some newer jewelry as well!

Hope to see you soon!

New Adventure!

Hi all...it's been a while since I have blogged about anything here except my monthly COM challenges.  I have embarked on a bit of a new adventure, though and thought I would share my recent post from Art Jewelry Elements here!

If you read that blog, sorry for the duplication, but if not, a couple of weeks ago, I experimented with some PMC3?  I shared with you that working with metal clay had been a big "want to do" on my art bucket list!  I had fun playing and really liked the outcome, but I will be honest with you,  the price of the silver clay and the limitations were a huge drawback.  I didn't want to admit it at the time, but after looking at the 2 little pairs of charms, plus the very small amount of raw clay I had left out of a 16g package, I realized that if I was going to go further with this dream, I had to rethink some things.

After a lot of research, discussions with my sweet hubby, advice from my awesome, talented, knowledgeable, patient and giving teammates at AJE, I decided to purchase a kiln!  Yes! Jumping up and down, clapping hands!

Here she is!  A Paragon Caldera...perfect for metal clay, ceramics, glass fusing, and more!
The consensus in the group was that this kiln would be the versatile tool for someone like me who is still testing the waters.  While I think it will predominantly be for metal clay, I would be able to dabble in ceramics or glass.  I will probably eventually purchase the enameling collar which will enable me to play with cloisonne, and other kiln-fired enameling!

I jumped right in and bought some 3 types of metal clay...Copper, White Copper and Bronze.  I found out later that I should have probably opted for FastFire Bronze, but that will have to be another day!  After reading all the firing instructions, I decided that the copper was the most straightforward so chose to work with that first.  I'm glad I played with the PMC3 before...this was similar, but not quite as finicky, and since I was able to afford much more of it, I wasn't so scared to mess up.

I was happy to see that a lot of the tools and texturing materials I had been collecting for my polymer clay worked perfectly with the metal clay as well! I have a running list of things that I know I will be going back and getting.

My 1st batch...they haven't dried yet.
So, I get some pieces made, drying, getting ready for cleanup and think I am ready for my 1st firing! Excitedly, I post to my team and they are all.."whoa, hold your horses, have you done a test run?"  I found out that I needed to run the kiln empty to make sure it worked.  Okay, I can still get these done, just a lot later!

After a successful test, and cleanup of my dried pieces, I loaded my new kiln for the first time.  By this time it was late, so I set my alarm to get up and check on it several times!  This morning, I opened it and found my treasure!  It was a bit sad to see my shiny new firing pan was now black and ugly, but I knew that was going to happen.  I found a slotted spoon and started sifting for the buried treasure!

Another thing I knew would happen, but maybe not quite so much was how much shrinkage happened.  The little squares and circles came out really tiny!  I need to remember to compensate for that more in the future!

My pieces right out of the charcoal, before cleanup!

Here they are, cleaned up with a brass brush.
Aren't they pretty?!  Next step is to patina and make them into something!  All in all, for a first try, I think this was a success!  I think one of the hard things will be to work at finding my own style with this..I mean, there are such talented metal clay artists out there...some of the best at AJE...Kristi, Karen, and Lesley! Thanks to them for the inspiration and sharing of knowledge!

Stay tuned!

AJE February Component of the Month - Fluttering Hearts

I am so honored to be part of the group of talented, kind and generous jewelry artists at Art Jewelry Elements!  One of my favorite things about being part of that team is participating in these Component of the Month challenges...it is so much fun to receive such gorgeous, unique pieces from these wonderful artists.  I have to say it is sort of humbling when it comes your turn to be on the 'component provider' end!

For February, I decided to offer hearts that I hand-cut from copper, shaped, then torch-fire enameled. The finishing touch was the addition of colorful glass frit.

I was trying hard to think outside the box this month and had something on my mind that I wanted to do...

I wanted to create a sort of  "milagro" type of sacred heart and did a search on Pinterest.  Wow, lots of inspiration there!  So I set to work.  I did some sketches, decided on one, then sawed it from copper.

I was going to leave it bare, with perhaps some texture, but changed my mind, and covered it with molten solder and embedded little brass flowers in.  I riveted the heart onto piece using balled copper headpins which also create a pin clasp in the back.  Not showing the back this time as I am not especially happy with it right now and am going to work on it some more with some other ideas I have for future pieces.

I chipped the heart as well when I was attaching it, but I just filed it down and patina'ed it with some liver of sulfur and left it...I think it adds to the "vintage" feel of the piece!

Below is our team of designers for this month.  I can't wait to see what everyone created!  How about you!

What I've been playing with lately!

Hi all - Raise your hand if you are so tired of winter ice and snow that you could just cry!  Both mine are up!  It looks like those of us in the Mid Atlantic area are due for some more this weekend, so maybe I will get some new jewelry made.

I know I haven't been blogging here regularly, so I thought I would stop by and show you some photos of things I am working on!  Have been bitten by the polymer clay bug after taking a class with Christine Damm at ArtBliss last year.  Hubby got me some materials for Christmas and I have been slowly but surely making my way through a few designs.  There is definitely a learning curve, but have been making molds like crazy!

Here are a few completed ones...the skull is for my boy!

This next batch are some that need to be finished...yes, a few got a bit dark, but they will be painted!

Here are the hearts I finally finished, but not in time for Valentine's Day.  They will be going in my shop soon, though along with most of this stuff, and hopefully a bit more!  Those tiny flowers are being placed on some cute little birdies.

Speaking of hearts, the AJE Design team, along with a few special guests will be showing their creations made from my enameled fluttery hearts for the February Component of the Month challenge...Be sure to stop back by on Monday, March 3 to take a gander at what we created.  I am so excited to see how everyone used them!  I hope to get a few more of  these made soon as well!

Thanks for stopping by!  I promise not to stay so long between posts!

August Component of the Month at AJE!

I have had the good fortune this past year to be a part of a wonderful group of artisans and designers over at Art Jewelry Elements for coming up on a year!  Time flies!  Speaking of that,  I hope you are having a fabulous summer!  It is hard to believe that we are only a few days from August...in only a few short weeks, many of us will be sending the kids back out the door to start a new school year...yikes!  I am about to have a 12 year old in the 7th grade, and it is blowing my mind, just how quickly he got there.

I signed up, way back at the beginning of the year to do a component of the month...August is my month.  Since I am relatively new to creating jewelry components, I was excited but a bit intimidated by the gorgeous lampwork, metal work, clay, polymer, bead work, etc. that came before me!   It took a while to figure out what exactly to offer, but finally decided on some of my Molten Morsels.  These mixed metal pieces are inspired by workshops I have taken with Stephanie Lee, Deryn Mentock, and Richard Salley...they incorporate copper sheet, in this case, layered with molten soft solder and embellished with brass elements. I was drawn to this style and use of soft solder from the very first try.   I love the vintage, or even ancient feel to them.  I can't wait to see what the team here at AJE will create with them.

Sorry for the yucky photos...these suckers are hard to get just right, and the brass reflects off the silver metal.  These have a light antiqued patina on them, but there so many other possibilities...I personally am going to be trying some Vintaj patinas I have stashed away!

Would you like to be a part of the August design team?  It is easy!  Go to the AJE blog and leave a comment on this post...     http://artjewelryelements.blogspot.com/2013/07/august-component-of-monthmelismatic.html

AJE Component of the Month Blog Hop - April Edition!

Hello out there!!  Today's post showcases lovely lampwork headpins, created by our fearless leader over at Art Jewelry Elements...Jennifer  Cameron of Glass Addictions.

I was thrilled to receive 2 pale blue transparent headpins with swirled copper wire inside!  You know me and swirls!  She indicated that we didn't have to use both headpins, but how could I resist?

I have been holding onto some special brass flowers to add to my enamel arsenal, and I decided they would be the perfect component to pair with the headpins.  I enameled them in a base of robin's egg blue, then dusted some orchid into the folds and torched.  Then, for good measure, added a bit of transparent raspberry!  I totally love how these turned out and have a few more sets of these that I will be playing with and offering for sale.

I decided to make some tiny caps for the headpins in the same orchid/raspberry hue.

Finished with some of my hand-wrought sterling and copper earwires, and embellished with Czech glass flowers, these awesome earrings measure about 2.25 inches.

Thanks for stopping by to see my creation!  Go see what everyone else came up with...you'll be glad you did!

Focus on Life ~ Week 4, Create Art

Sally's prompt for the week was "Make Art".

I do 2 things that I consider artistic...I make jewelry and I sing! I do both of them everyday, and while I might consider my daily jewelry making "art," most times the singing is anything but!  I sing in the car with the radio, loudly. I sing with Ben's video game theme music...drives him really crazy!  I sing around the house, whatever comes into mind.  I sing in my head...just mention a song and it will be with me all day!  I sing at church...I am lucky to be a member of a professional choir that sings Solemn Latin Mass weekly.  But this week, I pulled out a few of my old scores from my opera/classical singing days and sat down and ran through a couple of them.  Was it making art?  Probably to no one but myself!

The other art I made, I didn't actually start during the week, but I finally got around to finishing up a few more of my Molten Morsels...I embedded bezels and set some stones.  Not sure if I will sell these as is, or make something from them.
