Resin love...

Back in September, at ArtBliss, I took Deryn Mentock's Musical Earrings class, where I had my 1st Ice Resin experience....I loved the class, and loved the earrings I made there.  Deryn is a sweetie, and knowing I had to travel home that night after the class, she tried to convince me to use Diamond Glaze instead of  the resin since it would set up quicker.  I did not heed her advice and got home with earrings that  went pretty wonky...I wasn't able to keep them level on the long drive home from Virginia to Frederick and the resin ran into the wire work and set up.

1st resin attempt - wonky, but still pretty cool!
I attempted them again at home a few weeks later and the same thing sort of happened, even though I was careful...these are in copper.

Not to be deterred though, I struggled onward....I had a whole batch of resin mixed up after all, and I couldn't waste it!  Luckily, I had some bezels prepared for just the occasion...my problem was that I was pretty intimidated by the stuff!

These were actually brass ones that I enameled in the hopes of overcoming my resin fear!
I had the most high hopes for these, but they didn't dome quite the way I wanted...in fact they overflowed...notice the resin buildup in the curls.
These are my favorites...little brass charms I found on etsy, enameled, embellished with words, and filled.  More of these to come, I am sure!
I think I my resin fear is turning to resin love, although, the bubbles have thrown me for a loop...I have a few more I did with gorgeous Holy Marys for my Catholic show this weekend, and they all have bubbles in the way!  But onward and upward!

  1. Melissa! I am so impressed and inspired! I just had some online resin talk with a few people today. I think your pieces turned out fantastic...and there is no doubt your Mary pieces will sell out this weekend! Where is the show? I may be in Frederick on Saturday....
Did you print on a laser printer and use ModPodge or another sealer? Inquiring minds want to know! :-) I've had good luck with minimal bubbles...maybe it's in pouring slowly, or maybe waving a flame (the lighter kind) briefly over the bubble....seemed to work. Thanks for sharing!

  2. Wow, I think those are all pretty cool! I really had to look to see any wonkiness. I've been dying to try resin myself, but I'm still exploring metals....for now. :)

Looking forward to seeing more of your resin work!

  4. These are great Melissa. From your photos, I don't see the flaws. I'm glad you persevered because you showed a lot of really neat ways to use resin that I wouldn't have thought of ... like over enamel!

  5. Hi Melissa, I put a heat lamp over my resin pieces and the bubbles pretty dissolve. I also will use my torch which helps a lot too. The reason I had little air bubbles with my last batch of bezels is because I used a heat gone, which actually cause little bubbles to form in the resin.
I love working with resin...I am hooked.

  6. These are wonderful Melissa! Had you not pointed out some of the flaws (which I wouldn't even consider on some) I wouldn't have noticed either! The Virgin Mary is beautiful, saw the image and never even looked at the scrollwork! You could adopt the "I meant to do that" school of thought! best of luck at your show!

  7. Hey Melissa...glad you liked the class! You're class earrings look great. Although, if you don't like the finish, try re-coating them with the Ice Resin. Ice is always better to use than Diamond Glaze as it's jewelry grade. In fact, you can glaze right over the DG with the Ice, if necessary. The rest of your earrings are gorgeous...love the copper!

  9. These are beautiful and fantastic Melissa! I don't see the flaws, don't be so hard on yourself. The flowered leaves are really gorgeous. I have used the resin with a lot of success, but I have on my to do list the leaves, gonna have to try that soon!

They still look cool- at least from here. Glad you don't give up easily! The Diamond Glass is good stuff- although I have found colour can bled from some materials.
